At wedi Scandinavia, we made the decision back in 2022 to focus more on sustainability. Through teamwork among our employees, we have developed a strategy that supports the UN's Sustainable Development Goal No. 15, which is about "Life on Land." We want to contribute to a healthier planet, and our concrete effort is to develop areas that increase biodiversity.
Through our working group for this sustainable development goal, we created the concept "Children, Bees, and Blossom" – an initiative that brings joy to the cities where our employees live, creates experiences for both children and adults, and raises awareness about biodiversity.
For two years now, we have partnered with local preschools to develop knowledge and areas year after year. In our second year, we can now demonstrate a doubling of our biodiversity areas with four preschools in the Nordics. The concept is simple: we bring everything necessary, and the preschool provides an area where we can sow and plant, along with a group of children from the preschool. We explain biodiversity and why we at wedi work on this in relation to our sustainability efforts. Together, we sow and plant seeds, water them, enjoy a bun from the local bakery, and distribute diplomas – needless to say, printed on Nordic Swan eco-labeled paper. Each child also receives a small bag of seeds to take home, allowing them to share their knowledge and contribute to biodiversity at home.
We want to grow as a company and on an individual level, flourishing best when we are "pollinated" with new, exciting tasks and energy. At the same time, we can help the youngest members of society take the first step in sustainable business development: sowing a seed – "having an idea," watering it – "gaining skills," and watching it bloom – "succeeding." We are proud of our concept. It allows us to use our resources in new and different ways while contributing to society. It is not just the preschools that benefit, as we at wedi Scandinavia reap tenfold in return.
A big thank you to the preschools for their collaboration. We look forward to expanding the area with an additional 20 m² in each preschool next year.
