The fire advisors have solved the wet room challenge with the help of wedi

Hotel Grand Joanne is located on the cozy Vesterbro in Copenhagen. The beautiful newly restored 19th century building with six floors, with 162 rooms and Roof-top bar has loads of craftsmanship and design qualities, and emphasis has been placed on enhancing the special relaxed and at the same time stylish Vesterbro atmosphere everywhere.

The restoration took place from the spring of 2021 until the autumn of 2022. As part of modernizing, 162 beautiful bathrooms have been created here, which honour all requirements for fire protection and ease of construction; quite in keeping with what serves a fine old estate best.

In connection with the refurbishment, the wet room supplier wedi® came into play; since the hotel has wooden beams on all floors, it was a challenge to create new bathrooms that could meet the requirements for fire safety and did not impose too heavy of weight on the building.

Builder Borris Tangaa Nielsen, who owns several hotels in Scandinavia, and contractor Mortensen & Nielsen ApS got help with fire consultancy documentation through wedi. Therefore, the engineers and the building's fire advisor could give a well-founded assessment of the extent of the restoration. The drawing material from wedi was in order, and all construction principles documented that safety was under control. That is why wedi was given the extensive and exciting task.

Correct drops and gentle renovation methods

It took extra consideration to solve the challenges with central and decentralized drains, which are extremely important in an older building. Fortunately, wedi’s product range can solve such challenges.

The 162 bathrooms in three different sizes have varying designs. The linear drain floor system Fundo Riolito is primarily used throughout, and the remaining areas in the rooms have wedi's specially developed single-sided drop plates. Due to variation in drainage and construction options, wedi's Fundo Primo floor system with envelope drop has been used in some bathrooms. The construction has taken place in accordance with wedi's construction principle and is laid over the existing beam layer.

wedi's floor systems and drop plates are installed with wedi 610 adhesive and sealant. Ardex has helped with the waterproofing problem of the installed electric floor heating in wedi's floor systems supplied by Devi.
