Wedi contributes to preserving a 200-year-old property

In Femmøller is the old mill Kjerris Mølle, which has recently undergone a transformation. Here, wedi has played a significant role, and the mill has now been brought into the future.

The mill, which is one of four remaining water mills in the beautiful Mols Bjerge, can be traced back to the 17th century. Despite increasing decay, the mill itself was in use until 1966.

Refurbished from inside to out

The building complex with mill, lock and, last, but not least, farmhouse is restored through a long-term process. The farmhouse itself was built in 1822, and of course a lot of water has flowed in the stream since then.

The worn tile roof is removed so that roofers can lay thatched roofs. The half-timbered facades have been repaired, and everything inside the house has been renewed, repaired and new compatible modern materials have been used.

New technology solves challenges

After a thorough craftsmanship analysis, major restoration work has taken place, where new technology has been used, including wedi's floor systems. Building designer Torben Oxbøll from Tegnestuen Landhus ApS in Ry explains about this major task:

"When you, like me, work with the restoration and preservation of our cultural heritage - in the form of historic and preservation-worthy buildings, traditional and historic building materials are primarily used, such as wood, brick, lime, etc. But when at the same time you have to achieve up-to-date housing qualities, you often end up in a crossroads where modern materials are needed to fulfil 'modern' installations, such as bathrooms and other wet rooms where there are strict requirements. This has made itself felt in several projects, including at Kjerris Mølle, where the farmhouse was built in 1822 and of course was built without these kinds of modern facilities. Here I have used building boards and shower bases from wedi with great satisfaction. They are easy to install in both heavy and light constructions, while they are waterproof and light weight, which does not require load-bearing steel profiles and the like. The concept from wedi has been tried and tested with a large range - and for several years I have received impeccable service from wedi consultant Henrik Ohrt, who is also happy to show up at the construction site and solve special construction tasks or talk to the craftsmen," says Torben Oxbøll.
 

Healthy underfloor heating in the old house

New floor construction has been installed everywhere, and the wedi underfloor heating system Preline has been used throughout the house. On top of this underfloor heating system, floor tiles have been re-established, so that the expression and the entire floor surface remain true to the old building. In the bathrooms, the wedi Fundo Riolito Neo floor system is used in the shower area, and here a particularly unique solution has been created where floor tiles are laid so that they also cover the drain itself. Completely in line with the spirit of the place, a modern wet room has been designed in the most elegant way for the 200-year-old Kjerris Mølle.

Preserved for posterity

In the spirit of the times, it is not just to demolish, but instead to rethink such a fine and preservation-worthy building. The house is now habitable. The mills watercourse can once again allow eels to pass, the brinks and slopes around the building are planted with wild Danish flower species and yes, the whir of history can be felt here, without compromising comfort and convenience in any way.
